Going up or down the Douro River? Are there any major differences? What are they?

Find out which type of trip is right for you!

FIND THE ROUTE THAT SUITS YOU BEST!

GOING UP THE DOURO RIVER

The ascent of the Douro is a highly sought-after trip, the best-selling of our entire range. Departing at 08.00am from the Vila Nova de Gaia pier or at 08.30am from the Estiva pier, in Porto, set off for an excellent day accompanied by the Douro river, the surrounding nature and the best we have to offer inside the vessels that will take you to your destination.

You also have several options when it comes to traveling up the Douro River. You can opt for a shorter trip to Peso da Régua, then return to Porto by bus, or, once in Régua, you can opt for a visit to a Wine Estate, with wine tasting, accompanied by our guide, who will also take you to one of the most emblematic viewpoints in the region, the São Leonardo da Galafura viewpoint. The day will end at Régua train station, where our guide will drop you off so that you can take the train back to Porto and discover the famous and picturesque Douro river line.

If you want to go further and get to know a little more about what the Douro has to offer, you can go to Pinhão, a town of unique natural beauty. You can also visit a winery in the region, with wine tasting, and then return by bus to Porto.

In both cases, you can count on lunch and breakfast on board!

GOING DOWN THE DOURO RIVER

There is the possibility of going down the river, instead of going up, in this case, you can leave from Régua pier, at 10.00am and go down the river to Porto, arriving at around 6.00pm at the riverside area (Gaia or Porto side).

You can see our offer at: https://cruzeirosnodouro.pt/en/cruzeiro/regua-porto-regua-cruise-downstream-by-boat

If you're in the Porto area, but the trip downriver sounds more interesting than the trip up, you can do it! You'll go up to Peso da Régua by bus, then down the river, with lunch on board.

UP AND DOWN OF THE DOURO RIVER, WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

In truth, there are no major differences between the two trips - after all, we're talking about the same river!

It's just a matter of making the trip in one direction or the other!

Still, if you go up the Douro, you can enjoy breakfast on board the boat. If you choose to go downstream, this won't be possible, as you'll be getting on the boat later in the day.

Still, here's a tip: arrive at the riverside area at the end of the day, watch the hustle and bustle of a cosmopolitan city like Porto calm down as the sun goes down, all while on the boat, still feeling the waves? It will undoubtedly be a pleasant moment!
