In July 1873 work began on the construction of the Douro Line, which currently runs between Ermesinde and Pocinho.
This was completed in 1887, after engineering managed to drill its way through 26 tunnels and 30 points, overcoming obstacles and natural accidents.
Currently, the Douro line runs between Ermesinde Station and Pocinho Station. The route runs parallel to the Douro River, which explains its high tourist potential.
From Pocinho Station to the border with Spain, there are Foz Côa, Almendra and Barca d’Alva stations.
All are currently disabled, and this section was closed to traffic on January 1, 1985.
Port Wine and the world that rises around the Douro Line are presences that also do not go unnoticed in this, which is the oldest demarcated region in the world.
Along this route, this line skirts cliffs and hills, crossing landscapes whose beauty goes beyond what is possible to describe.

Pinhão Station was built in the 19th century and is one of the most beautiful in the country, with its facades decorated with tile panels that portray the ancient times of the people of the region.
The tiles were placed in 1937 and represent the landscape and way of life of the Douro people.
They contain images of the production of Port wine, the harvest, the treading of grapes, the transport of wine on Rabelo boats, among other typically Douro episodes.
There are 3047 tiles in total and they are by J. Oliveira.

Tua Station was inaugurated on September 1, 1883 on the Douro Line.
It is located in the municipality of Carrazeda de Ansiães.
In addition to the two-story main building, the station has a small museum and a point of sale for regional products, such as wine or jams.
The Tua station was an important point of shipment for various agricultural products.
Currently, it is the final stop on the route of the Historic Train.
On a route along the Douro River, the 5 historic carriages of the tourist train travel the distance from Pinhão to Tua, on a unique journey into the past.

Pocinho Station marks the end point of the Douro Line.
It belongs to the town of Pocinho, in the municipality of Vila Nova de Foz Côa.
It has been the terminal station of the Douro Line since 1988, due to the closure of the section that extended to Barca d’Alva and Spain.
This station, like Pinhão, contains several tiles by J. Oliveira.
These tiles represent various rural scenes from daily life in the Douro region.
You can embark with us on a cruise from Régua até ao Pinhão.
Upon arriving at Pinhão, just take a short journey to the station and board the Historic Train.
The steam locomotive departs from Pinhão, district of Vila Real, and heads to Tua, municipality of Carrazeda de Ansiães, on a journey with a privileged view of the Douro river and the terraced vineyards.
It is an authentic trip to the past.
The trip also includes animation on board a group of traditional music and songs from the region and a toast with a Porto Ferreira.
You can also taste Régua sweets, a tradition to be followed by anyone visiting this region.
