Although today it is a navigable river, in the past, Rabelo boats were essential for transporting Port Wine barrels to the cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia.
However, navigating the Douro River was once an extremely dangerous task. Strong currents and half-submerged rocks posed serious risks, while steep cliffs with massive boulders made the river nearly impassable. It was only in the 1950s and 1960s, with the construction of dams, that river transport became safer and Port Wine began to be moved mainly by tank trucks.
